The first tokenized Goldback on Solana
On August 9, 2026, at 14:03 UTC, someone bought the first tokenized Goldback on Solana. Not a promise of one. Not a test token on a test network. A real Goldback, minted on mainnet, paid for in SOL, sitting in a wallet anyone can inspect.
That first order was 44 Goldbacks for 4.99 SOL. The transaction is public and permanent. You can read it yourself.
The receipt
Every Obsidian mint settles on Solana, so the record is on the chain rather than in a database we control. The first sale is transaction JW9nHYzz…of9Hc1 on Solscan. It shows the buyer's wallet, the 44 Goldbacks delivered, and the SOL paid, in one atomic transaction. Payment and delivery happened together or not at all.
The token itself lives at mint address 7SsUyCh…spb7Z. That address is the original whole-unit Goldback token. The day before the first sale, on August 8, it was created with a supply of zero. The first units entered circulation when a buyer minted them.
What a Goldback is
A Goldback is a physical note with real 24K gold embedded in it, made to be spent like cash. One Goldback is 1/1000 of a troy ounce of gold. Tokenizing it means that same note-sized unit of gold moves at the speed of the internet: you can hold it, send it to anyone, and settle in about 400 milliseconds, any hour of the day.
What you can buy today
The Goldback you can mint in the Obsidian app today is the same asset at the same unit, issued through the current fractional token at mint 7k5rijz…Bmmy. The fractional form lets you buy any amount down to a fraction of a Goldback instead of whole notes only. It is priced at the published Goldback rate and minted against pre-funded inventory held with Alpine Gold Exchange (AGX), the custodian behind the metal.
Today's token is a Phase 1 note: a claim priced at the metal rate, sold from inventory that is already funded. The next phase adds a live, on-chain reserve reading alongside each mint, so the backing behind every unit is checkable by anyone rather than stated by us. That work is built and running on Solana's devnet today, and it is on the way to mainnet.
Why it matters
Gold has always been good at holding value and bad at moving. A Goldback already solved the spending problem in physical form. Putting it on Solana solves the distance problem: the same gold, now sendable to anyone, anywhere, in under a second. August 9 was the first time that happened. Everything since is the same idea, repeated.
